That’s another month done and dusted for the year 2016. It’s now April. Am I the only one who’s a little freaked out with how fast this year is going? My sister is currently preggers with my first little niece and we are all pretty certain we’ll be welcoming her into the world before May. I’m sitting by the phone just waiting for the call. It’s going to be a busy month!
What I’m Writing:
I was hoping I would be finished the reviews for Blessed Cursed by the end of March. Safe to say I was over confident. I’ve completed about half the manuscript so it may just take another month before I’ve finished. I’m still on the look out for Beta Readers so if you are interested please drop me a message and I’ll let you know the details. Blessed Cursed is currently sitting at roughly 120k words so I can safely say it’s the longest novel I’ve ever written so far.
What I’m Reading:
I’m still on the Dragons of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. Since my last update I’ve finished Moreta’s Story. A good book but probably not the best in this series. I feel the ending is too forced. Without giving much away, the tale of Moreta is known to anyone who has read the early books in the Dragons series including the end. I can’t help but feel McCaffrey really wanted to write this story about Moreta but, because she had already set the ending in earlier books, couldn’t change it. Therefore the ending feels forced, sudden and to be completely honest, a bit disappointing.
In March, I also read Nerilka’s Story, Dragonsdawn, The Renegades of Pern and All the Weyrs of Pern.
Of these, I have to take a moment to talk about Dragonsdawn. To put it bluntly, I. Love. This. Book. I do. I really do. Dragonsdawn would take a spot on my all time favourite books list. My copy at home is falling apart from too much reading. Dragonsdawn is set in a different time period to the rest of the series and tells the tale of the very first dragons and their riders. It’s the thickest book in the series (and for good reason because it covered a lot!)
I’ve only three more books in this series before I finish it and start on the next one. Does any one have any suggestions?
Have an awesome April!!
This last week I have started to re-read probably one of my favourite series from an author whom I would consider to be most influential on my writing. The Song Of the Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce. I have to admit, if I was allowed to meet any author I wanted, this is probably who I would pick.
The first book in The Song Of The Lioness Series is Alanna, The First Adventure. The story is centred around Alanna, a girl who doesn’t want to grow up to be a lady. She wants to be a knight and perform great deeds. But only boys are allowed to train to become knights so she cuts her hair and trades places with her twin brother. Taking the alias of Alan, she goes to the castle to prove her worth.
I loved re-reading this novel. I first read it years ago when I was still in primary school. My copy is looking more beat up than the picture to the left but it’s still whole. As a tomboy, the character of Alanna really spoke to me and I’m happy to say still does. This is the first time I’ve re-read Alanna since becoming a writer myself. It’s amazing the little things you start to notice. Tamora Pierce is a master of moving the story along without denying the reader. The short novel encompasses four years of Alanna’s life yet the story rolls smoothly from one incident to the next.
I have trouble with this when I write. It’s hard for me to write the passage of time. Reading this novel has reminded me that sometimes just a few words is all that’s needed.
I’m continuing onto the next book in the series today, In The Hand Of The Goddess. If you haven’t read this series yet, I recommend you place it on your list. It was the spark that ignited my passion for both reading and writing.
Hey Internet Peeps,
Last week was the last Short Story from the Elements. I hope you enjoyed them 🙂 Feels strange to think they were written so long ago. It’s simply amazing how time flies. I remember when this year was just starting and now all the shopping centre’s have their decorations up! Crazy.
This year’s NaNoWriMo is not going so well for me. I was sick last week and have fallen behind. I honestly don’t think I’m going to be able to catch up but I won’t give up. I’m trying to get myself into a strict schedule so I make up the difference.
My current WIP is sitting at roughly 40k words. I’m really enjoying writing this one as it’s very different to the Amethyst Series. I’m loving the opportunity to stretch my author legs and try something else. Not that I don’t love my Amethyst series but it’s nice to do something else for a change. Maybe if you guys ask nicely, I’ll post up an extract 🙂
Well I had best get back to it. Those worlds aren’t going to create themselves.
Stay Safe out there guys.
Hi Guys & Gals,
As some of you who have followed my website for a while know, back in 2013 I tried to create an online webseries called the ‘Arena of Champions’. Unfortunately due to other projects I just didn’t have the time to continue it. I was only able to do the first few entries. I created a character for each element and put together a little back story for them. Fire, Air, Water and Ground were posted up in 2013 but eight more elements never had the chance to shine.
During the next few weeks I’d like to share with you the ones which never got posted. I going to post the first up tomorrow and will add another one each Friday for eight weeks. All the posts end with the character being drawn in to the ‘Arena’ as they were meant to fight each other. The winner would be chosen depending on who the readers voted for.
I am thinking of starting up another webseries which follows the story of one of these characters and would like to know your favourite. Please feel free to comment on any which you like and I just may choose to write further about them. 🙂
Hey Internet peeps!
I’ve found a really interesting site. It lets you suggest stories for movies. Click the Link below and add your support! You can even suggest Actors and Film Makers you’d like to see involved in the project. I’d love to see who you think should play the main characters. I’ve already had suggestions of Ellen Page to play Shar, Orlando Bloom for Billea and Hugh Jackman for Dazzaroth! What a Fantastic Cast! Just click the picture below and make your own suggestions.
